Black to Green
The Heart of the Forest is a 10 square mile area within North West Leicestershire and South Derbyshire. Over the last 25 years this area has been transformed from a scarred landscape previously dominated by coal mining and clay extraction, to a sustainable landscape led by the creation of The National Forest. It’s an exceptional story of rapid landscape change, with woodland cover increasing over the last 20 years from 1% to 27%.
Black to Green is a £1.1 million project supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will work with communities to explore this incredible transformation providing opportunities to re-discover and appreciate both the natural and industrial heritage. Up until the autumn of 2018, we’ll be delivering a whole range of conservation and heritage activities focusing on engaging local people, developing habitats for wildlife and interpreting the extraordinary story of the change.
