The Needwood & South Derbyshire Claylands Column

The Needwood and South Derbyshire Claylands Zone forms part of the Ancient Forest of Needwood; mature watercourse and hedgerow trees and frequent pockets of historic estate woodlands give a well wooded feel to the landscape. This is an area with a strong pastoral character bounded by a pattern of hedged fields, wide straight roads and narrow, twisting lanes that link a scattered settlement pattern of villages and hamlets. A distinctive mix of timber-framed houses and red brick Georgian and Victorian farmsteads combine to form the vernacular architecture of the area today.

Part of the National Forest Company’s LANDshapes project, this Noon Column, situated at Jackson's Bank in East Staffordshire is made of English Oak, the sun will shine through the vertical slot for 10-15 minutes at ‘true’ noon on midsummer and midwinter’s days, creating a line of light in the shadow cast by the column. ‘True noon’ in the Needwood and South Derbyshire Claylands Zone occurs at 1.06pm in summer time and 12.06pm in wintertime. This cycle links the sculpture to the passage of time – celebrating the past, present and future of the Forest. Created by internationally renowned artist David Nash, this sculpture is designed to capture the essence of a mature tree, encapsulating the character local landscape. The sculpture is one of six that reflect and interpret the distinctive nature of the six landscape zones that make up The National Forest.
