Give a Father's Day Gift that Grows in The National Forest

Thursday, 28th May 2009

You and your dad will be invited to plant the tree, his choice of oak, ash or birch, at a special event in The National Forest later in the year, during the tree planting season. In the meantime he will be sent a personalised certificate with your special message for Father’s Day.

To make life easy you can buy ‘Plantatree’ online for £25 at or visit the website for further information.  Alternatively e-mail or telephone 01283 551 211.

Your dad’s tree will then be part of England’s most ambitious environmental project – the creation of a Forest for the nation.  The Forest covers 200 square miles, spanning parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

Or why not take him out for a memorable day in The National Forest.

Conkers Discovery Centre in Moira will be hosting its annual Father’s Day Assault Course Challenge on Sunday 21 June to put dads head to head in a test of fitness and agility.

The ‘Lads and Dads Day’ at Rosliston Forestry Centre, with activities that include archery, laser combat and climbing, has proved so popular that all places are now fully booked.  But don’t worry - there are still places available on the Father’s Day card making session at Twycross Zoo.

There are also many other activities in the Forest that can be booked as Father’s Day treats.  These include courses to learn traditional woodland craft skills, wood turning, conservation or bushcraft and survival.  Or for the thrill-seeking speed kings, there is go-karting, motor racing, sailing and even skiing within The National Forest & Beyond area.

There are historic houses and castles in the area, such as Ashby de la Zouch Castle, Calke Abbey, Donington le Heath Manor House and the fascinating Moira Furnace. The National Memorial Arboretum, Donington Grand Prix Collection and Great Central Railway are also popular with dads.

Or for fathers who enjoy a more peaceful environment, a walk through the growing woodlands or ancient forest that make up The National Forest would make a perfect day out with their children on Father’s Day.
