Cheer on Runners in the First Ever National Forest's 10K Run

Tuesday, 7th September 2010

Starting at Conkers at 10:15am, the 10K (6.21 mile) scenic off-road route will take runners along the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, through Donisthorpe Woodland Park and beside the Ashby Canal to Moira Furnace.  It will join the Conkers Circuit and skirt around Albert Village Lake to a fast finish at Conkers Discovery Centre.

Since the route passes through the grounds of Moira Furnace, staff at this historic visitor attraction will be getting out the Jelly Babies to give runners a bit of energy (at around 10:25am).  The café will be open offering freshly baked cakes and hot drinks to warm up race supporters as they cheer on runners.

Moira Furnace Manager Helen Shepherd said: “We are delighted the route will be coming past the Furnace and will be out in force to cheer on the runners!  It is great to get an event like this on our doorstep and we will be offering a discount on our Ashby Canal boat trips to all runners.”

Conkers Camping and Caravanning Club Site and YHA National Forest are located just off the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, literally next door to Conkers.  The modern and sustainable hostel has a bistro for coffees/lunch and there are steps up to the trail to watch the race.  Or spectators can watch the start at Conkers Waterside by the Ashby Canal basin. The finish is then a short walk through the tunnel to Conkers Discovery Centre.

Before the 10K, there will also be a mile-long fun run around the trails in Conkers Discovery Centre grounds for children and families.  All children who enter the fun run will get free entry to Conkers for the day, provided they are with a full-paying adult, enabling families to enjoy hundreds of indoor interactive exhibits and great outdoor attractions, including ranger activities, adventure playground, barefoot walk, interactive floor, sculpture, woodland, nature trails, lakes and the Conkerchoo train ride.
