National Forest 10K Date Announced

Wednesday, 4th May 2011

The date for the second National Forest 10K has just been announced and will set off from Conkers on Sunday September 18.  There will also be a mile-long fun run around the trails in Conkers for children and families.

The 10K (6.21 mile) scenic off-road route will take runners along the former railway, the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, to the young woodland of Donisthorpe Woodland Park.  It will follow part of the Ashby Canal, passing Moira Furnace to join the Conkers Circuit.  Cutting through mature and young woodland planted as part of The National Forest, and skirting around Albert Village Lake, the climax will be the fast downhill finish to Conkers Discovery Centre.

The maximum number of runners has been increased this year to 500 but race organisers are expecting this to fill quickly.

Andy Harris from the organising team, said: “It is such a great course, it proved really popular last year reaching its 300 maximum within a few weeks.  We expect the places to be taken again fairly quickly.”

A number of runners commented on last year’s race.  Sarah Richardson said: “Lovely, scenic, perfectly timed 10K, good way to finish the season.”  Liz Moore wrote: “I really enjoyed the race and it was a great atmosphere. This was the first race I had ever done and it has encouraged me incredibly!”  And Dafydd Prichard added: “I thought the race was excellent.  A genuinely interesting course that quite literally kept us on our toes! It was a great bit of the country to run around - plenty of variation with some challenging hilly bits.”

There will be cash prizes for the male and female winners, plus prizes for runners up, teams, veterans, beating last year’s top time and spot prizes.
