National Forest 10K Date Announced

Monday, 17th October 2011

With the dust barely settled on the trails after last month’s race, organisers of the National Forest 10K have just announced the date for the 2012 event - Sunday September 16.

Online entry has already been opened through

Andy Buck from the organising team, said: ‘It is such a great course and again, proved really popular this year.  Many of our runners have said they definitely want to run it again next year – having online entries open now means that they will be able to secure their space.’

First time entrant Nicky Manser said: ‘It was my first 10k race, but I really enjoyed it and although I live locally, I saw parts of The National Forest that are right on my doorstep that I didn't even realise were there!  It has given me the buzz to take part in more competitive races in the future! I will definitely be back next year to better my time.’

Experienced runner Carol Price added: ‘It has something for everyone - very varied scenery through woodland, by canal, round lake - great atmosphere too and love the downhill finish. I run about 12 races a year and last year voted this my favourite and, I have to say, I am voting it this year's favourite too!’

The 10K (6.21 mile) scenic off-road route takes runners along the former railway, the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, to the young woodland of Donisthorpe Woodland Park.  It follows part of the Ashby Canal, passing Moira Furnace to join the Conkers Circuit.  Cutting through mature and young woodland planted as part of The National Forest, and skirting around Albert Village Lake, the climax is the fast downhill finish to Conkers Discovery Centre.

Ceri Walker said: ‘This was my first 10km race after doing Parkrun a few times, and I enjoyed it so much I'm going to try and join Ivanhoe runners, and do a half marathon next year, so it has definitely inspired me.’

Using off-road trails, a 5K parkrun takes places every Saturday at 9am from Conkers Waterside and welcomes new runners of all abilities.  For more information on this free, weekly and timed run visit
