Prizes Spur On Runners in The National Forest 10K

Monday, 6th August 2012

Runners in The National Forest 10K on Sunday 16 September will be running that bit faster this year following the announcement of the fantastic prizes they could win!

As well prizes for first, second and third place, there is also a team prize, course record prize and prizes for the veteran classes up for grabs.  Prizes are:

1st male and female £100

2nd male and female annual family membership to Conkers

(kindly donated by the award-winning attraction based in Moira)

3rd male and female Relax Day at Champneys Springs

(kindly donated by Champneys Springs Health Resort near Ashby de la Zouch)

If any runner beats last year’s winning time they will be awarded the course record prize bonus of £25 in addition to their 1st place prize.

Running clubs or companies that field four of more runners in the 10K race, will automatically be eligible for the team prize.  Each member of the fastest four runners from the team will win a sports massage kindly donated by physiotherapists at Physio Form, located within the Burton upon Trent running shop - Running Form.

Veteran winners will have a special treat to discover skiing or snowboarding at Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre. This is perfect for total beginners just finding their ski legs through to advanced levels wanting to sharpen their technique in preparation for the winter season ahead. The prize includes professional tuition within a group lesson, lift pass and equipment hire.  There are six prizes for the winners of the veteran categories (male 40+, 50+, 60+ and female 35+, 45+ and 55+).

The maximum number of runners for the 10K, now in its third year, has been increased this year to 500 but race organisers are expecting this to fill quickly.  All 10K Runners need to enter in advance online through Runners World whereas fun entries should be made on the day only.

Girls and boys taking part in the mile-long fun run around the trails in Conkers will win gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third places. All fun runners will get a goody bag and free entry to Conkers (with accompanying adult).

There will also be spot prizes given out on the day including goodies from one of the leading manufacturers of sports equipment, Mizuno.  Five vouchers, each for a pair of trainers worth £100, will be handed to lucky runners on race day.  These would be claimed from Running Form in Burton upon Trent after the event. Mizuno will be bringing its Tech Truck to the event where runners will be able to have a gait analysis, gain advice on running and find out which running shoes suit their gait.

The 10K and fun run is organised by the National Forest Company, Conkers, South Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire District Councils in partnership with the local running clubs - Ivanhoe Runners, South Derbyshire Road Runners and Hermitage Harriers.  These friendly clubs welcome new members of all abilities.  Visit their websites for details on joining and potentially entering the team prize category:

·       Hermitage Harriers

·       Ivanhoe Runners

·       South Derbyshire Road Runners

The 10K (6.21 mile) scenic off-road route will take runners along the former railway, the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, to the young woodland of Donisthorpe Woodland Park.  It will follow part of the Ashby Canal, passing Moira Furnace to join the Conkers Circuit.  Cutting through mature and young woodland planted as part of The National Forest, and skirting around Albert Village Lake, the climax will be the fast downhill finish to Conkers Discovery Centre.
