Watch out for wolves in the Forest this weekend!

Wednesday, 12th September 2012

Wolf man Shaun Ellis will be sharing his wisdom about living with dogs – and wolves - at a spectacular event in The National Forest this weekend.

“The Wolves of Willesley Woodside” brings two days of sled dog and wolfdog demonstrations, agility, obedience, competition and fun events to the Forestry Commission’s Hicks Lodge National Forest Cycle Centre on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September.

As well as a Wolfdog Show on Saturday afternoon and demonstrations of dog and human competitions such as canicross, bikejor and scooter races with pure bred and crossbred wolfdogs, a K9 Duathlon of 2km or 5km on Sunday morning, throughout the weekend there are agility and obedience rings for visitors to enter their dogs and have a go.

If you really get the bug, sled dog and dog equipment manufacturers and suppliers will be available to talk you through what you need.

Shaun Ellis will give three sessions on Sunday, talking about ‘Circles of Development’, ‘Social Positions’ and ‘Behaviour and Development’, developed from his long experience of working with wolves and dogs, as seen on TV recently. He will also be the guest on Saturday evening at a buffet dinner at Hicks Lodge café.

“We know many locals and visitors enjoy walking their dogs in The National Forest,” said Sam Lattaway, Head of Landscape, Biodiversity and Recreation for the National Forest Company, “This event sounds great fun and promises to attract competitors and demonstrators from across Europe. We are very proud of the progress we have made in The National Forest to create habitats that are attractive to many different wildlife species; I don’t know if we will ever have wolves here, but it’ll be fun for the weekend!”

Hicks Lodge Cycle Centre is located on Willesley Woodside, Moira, Ashby de la Zouch LE65 2UP. There are eight and a half miles of safe off-road walking and cycle trails (with plenty of dog sleds this weekend!); a small car parking charge applies and the café serves delicious cakes.
