Course Records Smashed for Second Year at National Forest 10k

Both the men’s and ladies’ course records were smashed this weekend in the National Forest 10K that took place on Sunday 16 September on the trails around Conkers at the Heart of the National Forest.

Tim Hartley from Team Oxalis Planning beat his own record and took first place in 32 minutes, 33 seconds compared to the 2011 male course record of 34:03.  Nicola Nealon ran the course in 38 minutes, 6 seconds to win the ladies 1st place spot beating the ladies course record time of 40:53.  Both won the £100 prize plus the course record prize of £25.

Winning the 2nd place prize of annual membership to CONKERS, kindly donated by this award-winning attraction, was Mark Powell of Wigston Phoenix (33:34) and Steph Forrester (39:11).  3rd place runners who won a ‘Relax Day’ at Champneys Springs were Spencer Newport (33:45) of Barrow Runners and Laura Johnson (40:09).

Winners of the veteran age categories (male 40, 50 and 60 and female 35, 45 and 55) will have a special treat to discover skiing or snowboarding at Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre. This is perfect for total beginners just finding their ski legs through to advanced levels wanting to sharpen their technique in preparation for the winter season ahead. The prize includes professional tuition within a group lesson, lift pass and equipment hire.  The veteran winners were Craig Hinds (40+), Bill Fox (50+) and Paul Mckay (60+), Amanda Harris (35+), Wendy Roethenbaugh (45+) and Jackie Daudworth (55+).

The team prize went to Hermitage Harriers comprising Craig Hinds, Matthew Storer, Neil Docherty and Dean Kelleher who will each receive a sports massage kindly donated by physiotherapists at Physio Form, located within the Burton upon Trent running shop Running Form.

National Forest Company Chief Executive, Sophie Churchill OBE, presented the prizes. Sophie said: “The race is in its third year and continues to grow with a record number of runners again this year. It’s wonderful seeing The National Forest now providing such a great venue for an event like this and I thank all the volunteers who made it happen.”

As well as the 10K race there was also a Family Fun Run using the wooded trails at Conkers with Forest Dwellers, Moira Fox and Ernest Badger, setting the pace around the mile-long course.  Winners were:

  • Boys: 1st- Alec Sackhouse, 2nd- Chris Nealon, 3rd- Myles O’ Hanlon
  • Girls: 1st- Mollie O’ Hanlon, 2nd- Rhianon Woolerton, 3rd- Racheal Nealon

They received gold, silver or bronze medals and all fun runners received a goody bag and free entry to Conkers for the day.

There were spot prizes from osteopath Les Cox, Burton upon Trent-based running shop, Running Form and sports equipment manufacturer, Mizuno.

The event was organised by members of the local running clubs Ivanhoe Runners, South Derbyshire Road Runners and Hermitage Harriers, in partnership with National Forest Company, South Derbyshire District Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and CONKERS.
