Sponsor Celebrates 50 Years with 50 Runners in The National Forest 10K

Tuesday, 3rd September 2013

PHS Direct, sponsor of The National Forest, is sending a record number of competitors to this year’s National Forest 10K, which kicks off from Conkers Discovery Centre on Sunday 15 September.

PHS Group is taking the opportunity to celebrate its 50th birthday. Under the title “Running for 50 years”, over 50 runners from the Group - decked out in bespoke running vests - will be raising money for their charity partner, Together for Short Lives.

“The 10k is one of the ways that we are able to show our support for The National Forest,” said James Clark, Managing Director of PHS Direct. “This year we have over 50 runners coming from as far afield as Glasgow and Kent to celebrate PHS running for 50 years. Not only will they be able to get up close and personal with the Forest to find out all it has to offer, but they will also be staying over and investing in the local economy. It is going to be a great day and a huge success.”

Sophie Churchill, Chief Executive of the National Forest Company, said: “Some companies run to stand still but not PHS Direct! Its business continues to thrive and develop and it has a fantastic track record in looking outwards and supporting good causes. The National Forest is also a dynamic project and it’s going to be fantastic to cheer on the 50 PHS competitors at the fourth National Forest 10k.”

The National Forest 10K is organised by local race organisers Jackrabbit Events. Now in its fourth year, this popular 10K race offers a scenic off-road route that takes runners along the former railway, the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail, to the young woodland of Donisthorpe Woodland Park. It follows part of the Ashby Canal, passing Moira Furnace to join the Conkers Circuit. Cutting through mature and young woodland planted as part of The National Forest, and skirting around Albert Village Lake, the climax is the fast downhill finish to Conkers Discovery Centre.

Nearly 400 runners from all over the country took part in the event last year.

The closing date for entries is 13 September so there is still time to book your place at the start line. The 10K starts at 10.15 am and online advance entry costs £11 affiliated, £13 unaffiliated. New for this year is a Nordic walking category, and entry for this also costs £13. Entry on the day will cost £16.

As well as the 10K run, a 1-mile fun run starts at 9.30 am. This uses trails within Conkers Discovery Centre and is open to children from 4 to 14 years old.

Entry for the Fun Run is on the day only, and costs £2.50. Fun Runners have free entry to Conkers for the rest of the day if they have more energy to burn off!
