Dean and Smedley Runs for Fun in The National Forest

Thursday, 29th May 2014

National Forest sponsor Dean and Smedley Family Pharmacies is delighted to be organising a Fun Run on Sunday 8 June to support environmental education in The National Forest.

The company’s 11 locations mirror The National Forest, with pharmacies in East Staffordshire, South Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire (as well as Derby). Dean and Smedley has chosen to support both the Environmental Education Project at Rosliston Forestry Centre and Community First Responders through this event. The company hopes to raise enough money for the Environmental Education Project to provide tools and staffing for family events like ‘Drop in Gardening’ and ‘Wildlife Watch’. The company has a strong commitment to health promotion and healthy living, which is perfectly expressed by using a Fun Run for their fundraising campaign.

Lucy Dean said: 'We are a family-run business with strong roots in the local community. We have been trading for almost 90 years and have seen many changes in the area, and it is great to be involved with an environmental community project like this. We loved the idea of using a gentle Fun Run as the focus for our fundraising and are looking forward to giving people this opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.'

The ‘Fun Run’ on Sunday 8 June is along a four mile route at Rosliston Forestry Centre but there is the option to walk the one mile sculpture trail for the less able. They hope to have up to 200 staff and family members taking part with another 200 spectators.

Kate Allies, Manager of the South Derbyshire Environmental Education Project at Rosliston Forestry Centre, said: 'The Environmental Education Project team is enjoying working with Dean and Smedley Family Pharmacies on the event and also very grateful for the support they are offering. We will use the money raised to deliver outdoor environmental activities for people to enjoy – which will also benefit their health through being active outdoors. The kind of events we do include ‘Drop in Gardening’ every Monday afternoon (except bank holidays), Wildlife Watch family activities in the school holiday and school visits. Money will pay for staff time and also equipment.'

She added: 'We really need some more garden forks for our gardening and conservation activities and have a ‘wish list’ of other tools!'

Lynne Richards, Head of Fundraising for the National Forest Company, said: 'Raising money and having fun is a great combination. We are delighted Dean and Smedley is supporting these two inspiring organisations in The National Forest and we’re really looking forward to supporting the runners and walkers on Sunday 8 June.'

Steve Nesbitt of Dean and Smedley, and responsible for organising the event, said: 'We are looking forward to a fun day out for all our staff as well as fundraising for a good cause.'

Running Form in Burton upon Trent has donated four £10 vouchers as prizes, and will distribute flyers with discounts for participants at the event on 8 June. See:

Anyone wishing to join in the fun should collect a form from their local Dean and Smedley pharmacy. There will be a few places available for registration on the day.
