Calling All National Forest Landowners With a Spare Acre or Two: Tree Planting Has Never Been Easier

Tuesday, 5th February 2008

The National Forest Company (NFC) is offering landowners within the 200 square miles of The National Forest two simple schemes for tree planting this year.

They can create a bespoke one acre wood, or maximise more space (in all about one hectare) and plant between 500 – 2,000 trees.

For the former, the NFC supplies the landowner with 420 trees; the optimum number for a one acre woodland, all free of charge.

Although the second option is on a larger scale it is still very straightforward. NFC staff will advise on the design, evaluating where and which species of tree to plant. The NFC then provides and plants the trees, supplies tree guards, erects fencing if necessary and maintains the trees afterwards.

Since the early 1990s a wide range of individuals and organisations throughout the Forest have been working with the NFC to create a wonderful range of woodlands. As the trees grow they offer habitats for all kinds of wildlife, have a positive effect on the environment and become a cherished landscape feature that changes with the seasons in terms of colour, shape, sound and texture. Ultimately some of the woodland will be harvested for timber and wood fuel.

Small woods can provide many of the benefits of larger scale planting. Carefully planned they can be used to screen roads or buildings, act as shelterbelts and are especially valuable where they link existing areas of woodland providing corridors for wildlife to move freely from one to the other.

Simon Greenhouse of the NFC said: "The National Forest is making its mark on the landscape and the lives of the people who live and work here, and the wildlife that inhabits the Forest: this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of this, and an extremely attractive, simple way of doing so."

He continued: "Landowners should think seriously about taking advantage of these schemes while they are available this year. Do it now – the tree planting season only lasts until the end of March, so call the National Forest Company now to talk through your ideas and get us started on the hard work!"
