Celebrating Success with The National Forest

Friday, 10th October 2008

“As a merchant that sells ‘green’ products for domestic use, we wanted to celebrate the opening of our 300th branch in a sustainable way,” explained Alan Ball, Managing Director of Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS), at a National Forest Company event last week.  “Our head office is in Lutterworth, so supporting The National Forest is the perfect option.”

Over locally-sourced scrambled eggs and bacon in the chic surroundings of the newly-opened YHA National Forest, business people from across the region joined the National Forest Company (NFC) to hear about the success of the Forest to date, and to discuss plans for the future. The National Forest spans 200 square miles of the Midlands – about half of it in Leicestershire – and the NFC is charged by government to create The National Forest.

The event, hosted by Sophie Churchill, NFC Chief Executive, was to thank businesses for their commitment and enthusiasm in supporting the Forest, and to ask for their thoughts and advice on future developments.

Sophie Churchill was upbeat about the future of the Forest:  “Our ambition for the Forest is as strong as ever. We have planted more than seven million trees, we have increased the woodland cover from 6% to nearly 18%, but we still have so much more to do.

“If anything we are higher up the political agenda now, as The National Forest has always been about so much more than just the trees.  It is a place for people to relax, to walk and cycle and look after their health. People also enjoy seeing the wildlife, which is flourishing as habitats are created and restored.”

Lynne Richards, Head of Fundraising with NFC, added:  “Working in partnership with business is really rewarding for us and great fun too. We help companies achieve their environmental as well as corporate social responsibility objectives, and they support us with finance, advice and huge amounts of enthusiasm.”

Alan Ball elaborated on why PTS had signed up with the National Forest Company: "We supply customers with renewable energy products such as solar panels and energy efficient boilers on a daily basis, so as a company we are well aware of environmental issues. We have even opened a Renewable Energy Branch which is powered by and sells green energy products.

"We not only want to advocate the adoption of eco-friendly technology in our industry but continue to actively do our part to cut carbon emissions. To achieve this and to celebrate the opening of our 300th PTS trade counter, we decided to plant 300 trees with The National Forest. It is fantastic to mark this achievement in a sustainable way and know that our contribution will continue to grow and improve our region."
