Loughborough University

In 2009 Loughborough University celebrated one hundred years since the founding of the Loughborough Technical Institute from which the University emerged. Throughout the year the University's commitment to environmental sustainability has been evident through a range of events. Speakers included environmentalist Jonathon Porritt who also received an Honorary degree in the year, Dame Barbara Stocking, Chief Executive of Oxfam GB and John Heywood who specialises in research into new automotive fuels at MIT. The University displayed the Hard Rain exhibition which is an outdoor exhibition showing the impacts of climate change, war and social injustice linked to the words of the Bob Dylan song. An open day for the local community saw many talks, exhibits, displays and hands-on demonstrations linked to environmental issues.

To top it off the University wanted to put something in place for the future and chose to plant 100 trees at Poppy Wood in The National Forest as well as 100 trees on the University campus at the Horseshoe Wood. This involved senior managers, environmental champions and students.
