Established in March 2007 by husband-and-wife team Adrian and Helen Hart, Bristol-based small publisher SilverWood Books takes a collaborative approach to publishing, working in partnership with authors to produce high-quality books that can be confidently marketed in bookshops and on the internet.
An Empowered Publishing® deal with SilverWood Books means that publisher and author share some of the costs of professional book production. Helen Hart explains:
"To offset this initial investment, we pass on to our authors a more favourable royalty rate than most mainstream or traditional publishers. Sharing the upfront costs means we can take more risks than mainstream publishers because we don't need a guaranteed bestseller - our print runs can be very small."
Empowered Publishing® with SilverWood Books offers writers an opportunity to make their own decisions, work to their own timetable, and keep a greater sense of control over the way their work is presented to their readers.
After a successful first year in business, SilverWood Books decided to support The National Forest by pledging to plant a tree for every title published. Adrian Hart of SilverWood Books says:
"We encourage our authors to specify FSC-certified paper wherever possible. But Helen and I personally wanted to go further, and decided to become involved with The National Forest. We're really excited to be taking part in the next tree-planting event in December 2008."
