How to use the Maps

1. How to use the ’browsing options‛
Using the ’browsing options‛ menu on the left you can choose to view different types of information on the map. Select from ’woodland sites‛; ’walks‛ showing the location of defined routes and paths; and ’visit‛ showing things to do and see, within the National Forest. You can also access the ’introduction‛ overview and this ’help‛ section using this menu at any time.
2. How to use the ’map view‛
The ’map view‛ displays a map of the National Forest area, displaying those areas of points of interest that the user has selected. What appears on the map can be customised by using the ’browsing options‛ and ’options‛ menus (see above and below). Use the arrows around the edges of the map to move in that direction around the map, and the ’zoom‛ function to increase or decrease the displayed size of the map.
To zoom in, simply click the button displaying the plus-sign (+). To zoom out, click the button displaying the minus-sign (-).
The bars between these two buttons show the current level that the map is ’zoomed‛ in, ranging from far (left-side) to near (right-side). You can jump to a specific zoom-level by clicking on one of these bars at any time.
Alternatively, you can manually select a zoom-level by choosing a scale ratio from the ’scale‛ drop-down menu. The scale works in metres. For example, a ratio of 1:400000 means that for every metre shown on the screen, that is equivalent to 400,000 metres at ground level in the map. The lower the ratio, the closer the map zooms in. A measurement ruler is shown below the map to display the relative size of the map in metres.
3. How to use the ’options‛ toolbar
After selecting your type of information to view using the ’browsing options‛, you can customise this further using the ’options‛ toolbar, located to the right of the map. You control which items are displayed on the map by ticking and un-ticking the boxes next to the list of items. By default all the options will be switched ’on‛ when you enter the screen, and therefore all items will show up on the map.
To remove an item from the map being displayed, un-tick the box next to it by clicking on it. Then click the map itself to refresh the view with these new choices. To add an item to the display, simply tick the relevant box and refresh the map again by clicking on it.
To view all of the information on the map, especially in the ’visit information‛ section, you may need to zoom-in more into the map.
How to use the ’query results‛ area
When you are zoomed-in to the map far enough, individual icons will display for items that are being displayed on the map, depending on what kind of attraction or place that item is. You can see examples of this on the picture of the map on the left. By clicking on the icons themselves in the map, information on that item is displayed in the ’query results‛ section. You can use this to find out more about an item that interests you.
