Newton Road, Heather

An 11.2ha woodland owned by the National Forest Company and situated on the edge of Heather village. It was created with financial assitance from Severn Trent Water, former chairmen of the National Foret Company, Charnwood Girls Brigade and landfill tax awards.  The woodland is divided into a number of compartments dedicated to the people and organisations who planted or contributed to them:

• Swarbrick's Wood is named after former National Forest Company chairman, Rodney Swarbrick;
• Havian Copse after the former chairman, Viv Astling and his wife;
• Yew Wood was planted by staff from the Company to mark the Millenium;
• Severn Trent Water employees contributed towards their copse by the STW works; and
• Charnwood Girls Brigade planted the copse at the site entrance.

Biodiversity is a key feature of the Newton Road scheme, with native black poplar and bluebells planted on site, and habitats created and managed for noctule bats, otters and ruddy darter dragonflies - all species featured in the National Forest Biodiversity Action Plan.
