In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, the story of George Green, a forest operative apprentice at the National Forest gives, offers hope and inspiration to others considering this as a route to employment. After successfully completing his apprenticeship with the Forest, he's now been offered a full-time position with local forestry contractor C J Springthorpe.

Starting his journey in February 2022 through the first-ever forestry apprenticeship scheme supported by SMB group at Melton Mowbray college, George's two-year stint showcased his commitment and love for the job, making him an essential part of the team.

George, who lives in Leicestershire, said: "I've always loved being outdoors, taking in the scenery and the fresh air of the local countryside."

Lockdowns during COVID-19 deepened his connection with nature, motivating him to apply for an apprenticeship with the National Forest.

During his apprenticeship, George learned about tree identification, forestry rules, and the everyday tasks of forest care. From planting trees to understanding seasonal tasks, he got hands-on experience in both preserving ancient woodlands and creating brand new ones.

Working with local contractor CJ Springthorpe was a crucial part of George's journey, giving him hands-on experience of working in the forestry sector, together with a greater appreciation for the National Forest's landscape.

Matthew Springthorpe, owner of C J Springthrope said it was an easy decision to offer George a full time job upon completing his apprenticeship.

Reflecting on his experience, George said: "As I look back, the time has really flown by, and I've learned a lot about the forestry industry.

“I'm happy I followed my goal of working outdoors and doing something I'm passionate about in an environment-focused setting.
