The National Forest is helping to create a greener and healthier future for all young people. Over 90% of primary schools in the National Forest now provide regular outdoor learning within their grounds or local woodland settings and we are committed to supporting more opportunities across the Forest.
We believe outdoor learning is an important part of children's education. Research shows that spending time in nature can improve learning, wellbeing and overall development. Outdoor environments offer opportunities to explore, discover and build confidence in ways that are not always possible in the classroom, helping children develop a lasting connection with nature.
We work with schools and education providers of all ages, from early years through to secondary education. We also support Years 10 to 13 pupils working towards a Level 1 Forestry in the Community Award.

Our Champion School programme recognises schools that are leading the way in outdoor learning across the National Forest.
Champion Schools demonstrate a strong commitment to learning beyond the classroom and helping children connect with nature through regular outdoor experiences. In return, schools may benefit from additional support, funding opportunities when available, and opportunities to share best practice with others.
To achieve Champion School status, schools must meet our nine criteria and provide the evidence listing in our Champion School checklist. Status is reviewed every two years to ensure schools continue to deliver high-quality outdoor learning.
