Summary

A coming together of industry and ecology is perfectly illustrated in Furnace Wood, with the woodland park sitting alongside an old canal side Napoleonic blast furnace. In an area that was once a hotbed of iron making and industrial ingenuity, a woodland of ash, oak, Scots pine, silver birch, holly, elder and thorn is being regenerated. This 5.3-hectare site was purchased by North West Leicestershire District Council from British Coal in 1996, consisting of woodland, ponds and agricultural grazing land. Three public footpaths cross the site and a stone path has been created through the wood to improve access.
