Volunteer in the Heart of the Forest with the National Forest Company

Become an NFC Volunteer. Help shape the future.

We are the National Forest Company. You are the National Forest. Help us grow your heart.

As the first Forest to be created at scale in England for over 1000 years, the National Forest has transformed swathes of landscape scarred by coal mining and heavy industry into varied woodland habitat.

The Heart of the Forest encompasses an area in the centre of the National Forest of around 10 square miles, and we are looking for more volunteers to help us enhance some of our sites in this area including Albert Village Lake, Diana Memorial Woodland, Conkers, and more, with the aim of making these more accessible, raising their profile, and managing and protecting the wildlife for future generations to enjoy.

What do I need and where can I help?

Only your enthusiasm is needed! We provide the tools, knowledge, support and tea - we simply ask that you make your own way to the site to meet our Community Ranger, bring some food and water with you, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for being outdoors.

We are currently working on the following sites:

  • Albert Village Lake
  • Diana Memorial Woodland
  • Conkers Waterside and Discovery
  • Rawdon Fishing Lakes
  • Maybury Woods

What activities can I do?

There are all sorts of activities to get involved with, which vary from site to site and from season to season. These might include:

  • Woodland management (including selective thinning and coppicing)
  • Pond restoration
  • Path management
  • Citizen science projects (for example, species recording)
  • Site furniture building (including woodworking or building using natural materials)
  • Meadow management
  • Litter picking
  • And more!

How do I get involved?

Regular volunteer days are held on a fortnightly basis, from 10.00am to 2.30pm on Fridays, with occasional weekend sessions.
