Autumn fungi walks and foraging events in the National Forest

This autumn, the National Forest is inviting families, nature lovers, and the simply curious to step into a world of wonder and explore its rich fungal diversity through a series of walks, foraging courses, and nature identification events.

Thanks to its unique mix of ancient woodlands, newly planted forests, meadows, and restored wetland areas, the National Forest is a haven for fungi enthusiasts. Visitors may spot bracket fungi clinging to old tree trunks, red and white fly agarics peeking through leaf litter, jewel-like waxcaps carpeting mossy patches, and tiny scarlet elf cups in damp corners. Bizarre stinkhorns and enormous puffballs add to the Forest’s truly strange, weird, and wonderful fungal kingdom right on your doorstep.

Join the Fungus Forum

Guided walks across the National Forest offer a hands-on way to identify fungi and understand their vital role in supporting healthy woodland ecosystems. These events also contribute to biodiversity monitoring by recording fungal species throughout the Forest.

To bring enthusiasts together, the National Forest has launched the Fungus Forum, a welcoming community for anyone interested in fungi across South Derbyshire and beyond. Open to all ages and experience levels, the forum hosts weekly sessions in October and monthly meetings year-round, both online and in the field.

Members learn how to identify fungi using guides and keys, explore habitats, understand the importance of fungi in local ecosystems, and discover cutting-edge techniques like eDNA recording. Regular guided walks and expert-led sessions make it easy to deepen knowledge and connect with others.
