Explore the National Forest on two wheels with the Coal and Canopy Way

Created by local riders Geoff Payne and Dave Hunt in partnership with the National Forest and the National Trust, the route celebrates the rich variety of landscapes that define this part of the Midlands. Former coalfields, ancient woodland, newly planted forests, wildlife habitats and contemporary art all feature along the way, with every mile revealing a different chapter in the Forest’s story.

Designed as a two‑ to five‑day gravel journey, the Coal and Canopy Way follows a carefully planned mix of forest tracks, bridleways, canal towpaths and quiet lanes. Riders can begin at any point on the loop, with convenient rail connections at Loughborough and Burton.

For those with less time, five circular routes offer one‑day adventures ranging from the family‑friendly 22km Heritage Loop to longer rides exploring Charnwood, Needwood, Cannock Chase and the Cloud Trail. GPX files, Komoot mapping and practical route information are available to help cyclists plan their ride.

The route leads riders through a landscape that has been steadily reshaped over the past three decades, where former industrial sites now sit alongside new woodlands, restored habitats and thriving green spaces across Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.

Cyclists pass through more than 50 named woodlands, from ancient sites such as Robin Wood to newer forests including Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood. Along the way, they encounter landscapes once defined by mining, quarrying and industry, now reconnected through woodland creation, wildlife corridors and accessible green spaces.

The Coal and Canopy Way also links two historic forest landscapes. To the east lies Charnwood Forest, known for its dramatic hills and internationally significant geology. To the west, riders explore the historic Forest of Needwood before continuing towards Cannock Chase National Landscape, creating a journey through places shaped over centuries.
