Wildlife events in the Forest to get closer to nature this summer

Summer is a great time to connect with nature and the outdoors, and what better way than by coming along to a wildlife event in the Forest this season. Whether you’re looking to brush up on your bird identification, head out on a twilight walk to learn more about the nocturnal creatures of the Forest or learn how to identify dragonflies – you’re sure to find something that suits you!

Butterfly Walk

Time: 1.45pm - 3.30pm 

Location: Rosliston Forestry Centre

Join local enthusiast Peter Brewster on a butterfly safari around the site. Meet at the picnic area for a 2 mile amble (no stiles). Children welcome, assistance dogs only.

FREE. No booking required.

Nightwatch

Location: Rosliston Forestry Centre

Find out more about nocturnal creatures and the night sky with experts from local groups to guide you on talks, walks and displays throughout the evening.

Experts on the night will be from: Derbyshire Bat Group, Staffordshire Bat Group, Derbyshire & Notts Entomological Society (DaNES), ARD Birds of Prey, Rosliston Astronomy Group, South Derbyshire Badger Group and Derbyshire Amphibian & Reptile Group.

Bumblebee Walk

Discover the wonders of bumblebees with our regular bee counting walks. Learn how to monitor our local bumblebee population and join our volunteer group. Bumblebees are in crisis and regular counts can help the conservation groups monitor their progress.

No experience necessary just come along and meet like minded people for a guided bumblebee count across Coronation Park & Cadley Park. Get to know your local park and local residents whilst supporting bumblebee conservation.

Birdwatching for Beginners

Time: 11am - 4pm

Location: Rosliston Forestry Centre

A monthly FREE guided walk around the Forestry Centre to identify the local birds and wildlife. Our volunteers will also aim to give you information specific to the season and any local news and sightings. Everyone including experienced "Birders" are welcome, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. We have binoculars available for you to borrow.

Everyone is welcome and no booking is required!

Damselflies and Dragonflies

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Local expert Tony Slater will be your guide on this peaceful amble where you will mostly stand and observe – this is not an intense walk.

Learn to identify damselflies and dragonflies and learn all about these magnificent creatures that are over 300 million years old!

Everyone is welcome, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note to dress for the weather and bring a drink if it’s hot. Bring binoculars if you have them for a closer look.

Booking is essential.

Bat Walk

Join the Leicestershire and Rutland Bat Group for a evening Bat Walk at Moira Furnace. Walk along the canal and through the furnace plantation as we look for bats.

FREE for Leicestershire & Rutland Bat Group Members, £3 per person for non members. Booking essential, please book all walks by emailing batevents@outlook.com
